Writing Sample 1: Fiction Writing

"Secrets of Ylandor"by Roger Alan CottonIZarina glanced furtively toward the Captain and his unwashed crew. Like a pack of starving animals squatting around their prey, they tore apart the still-steaming carcass of the enclave ambassador. Negotiations with these barbaric catweres was a tenuous matter at best. Evidently, hunger got the better of their taste for diplomacy. Father, I am sorry we failed you.With Torval dead, and she in fetters, there could no longer be a treaty. More blood would be spilled. Zarina tried to slip her delicate hands out of the manacles that chained her to the cluttered deck. It was useless. Her wrists were raw from repeated attempts. A wave of panic began to wash over her, but she fought it down.I am daughter to the Enclave Prefect. I will not give these animals the satisfaction. Her bravado quickly melted as she suddenly remembered the Captain's leering expression when his men had first dragged her onto his vessel. The Cattin leader had walked up, tore at the robes and veils that concealed her voluptuous body, and then let out a lusty sigh as he stepped back to appraise her physical gifts. Zarina shuttered. After the meal...Is he going to want dessert?With renewed vigor, Zarina pulled on the chains. Again with little success. The Cattin sailors roared in lascivious laughter. Oh, Bren, my darling, where are you..?Zarina looked away just as the captain buried his claws into Torval's throat. She heard a sickening snap, and then the sound of rending flesh and muscle. After a victorious roar, she could hear insatiable chewing. Poor Torval... IIThe tip of the sonic barb hummed past Brennok's head and wedged itself into the stone wall behind him. As the korg warrior struggled to dislodge its weapon, Brennok used the opportunity to draw Flame Breather from its holster. Unfortunately, the reptilian was fast. It lashed out with its tail and knocked away the sidearm. Brennok's hand stung. Flame Breather slid down the temple hallway, and disappeared into the darkness.Cowering behind Brennok, Pol held a chromium arm up in defense, and tried desperately to elicit the effects of tolka. However, he had been severely damaged by the korg's surprise attack, and was unable to do so. His speech was slurred, and the glow in his crystal eyes had dimmed. Brennok feared Pol would cease functioning before the korg could be defeated. Focusing on the reptilian's torso, Brennok waited until its scaly tail had stopped whipping around. Then, as the korg prepared to leap, Brennok pulled the tolk stave from Pol's grasp, and twisted a bronze band within its handgrip. The carbonite orb at the end of the stave crackled to life. Just as the korg sprang, Brennok lowered the orb toward the reptilian and clumsily muttered a tolka incantation. The korg became transparent and hissed in agony. Its final shriek echoed through the massive chamber as it dematerialized in mid-leap, showering Brennok in its ashes.Exhausted, Brennok slid down the wall and collapsed next to the Druud. After a few silent moments, he realized the metallic being was unnaturally still. He checked Pol's eyes, then cursed. His optical crystals had burned out. Brennok sat there, stunned. Though he had known the Druud Vox for only a short time, he had come to depend upon the chromium being's sage wisdom and guidance. Pol had helped Brennok to heal from the near fatal wounds he had sustained during the Cattin ambush. He had also helped to ease Brennok's anguish over the abduction of his betrothed, Zarina, daughter to the Enclave Prefect of Abraxia. The prefect himself had been brutally assassinated shortly after the ambush. All hopes for peace were gone, and all out war was imminent.During his long recovery, Brennok learned a smattering of tolka from Pol. Commonly referred to as ElderSpeak, the magical language was not as hard to grasp as he had heard. But now, Pol was gone. There was nothing Brennok could do for his metallic friend except sadly whisper the Chant of Ascendance.Brushing himself off, Brennok picked up the heavy bronze medallion the korg had been wearing. At its center was a brilliant sapphire surrounded by semi-precious stones. Brennok turned it over and read the inscription etched on back: "Ocularus Xo Garr." Brennok swallowed. The Eye of Xog. So.. .the dark god has returned. The sinister events of the past few days suddenly made sense. The uncharacteristically bold raids by the Cattin; the abduction of Zarina, followed by the assassination of her father, Lord Durren; and then, the cryptic references Pol had made about a "shadow reaching over the land." Someone was trying to destroy the Yamar Affiliation. The medallion was the key to this intrigue. It proved dark forces were rallying against the Yamarian peace efforts. Brennok was certain Xog had returned to finish what he had started five years earlier: His sadistic domination of Ilandor.Brennok slipped the medallion into a pouch. If he wants his damned eye, let him send a hoarde of daemons to retrieve it. He knew what he had to do. He retrieved Flame Breather and then picked up two leathern satchels; slinging them over his shoulder. He then hefted the old man's stave, and strode through the chamber portal. As he did, he took one last glance at the stone caryatid carved on either side of the archway. Pol had been examining the life-like figures when the korg attacked. It was ironic that after weeks of having wandered lost through the labyrinthine halls of the subterranean temple, Pol should die when he did. And, after we finally found the damned way out...Brennok retrieved his sidearm and slid it into its holster. Giving a final glance at his robotic friend, he hefted up the Druuds stave and turned. He used it to feel his way through the darkness of the temple corridor. After a while, he reached a long flight of stony steps that led up to the surface. IIIZarina stroked the surface of the chromium water as the Cattin skiff drifted downstream. The liquid metal felt soothing. Trailing ripples caused the light of Those-Who-Look-Down-From-Above to sway and dance on its calm reflective surface. The Captain was below, snoring loudly, sated by the gruesome feast. Zarina wished beyond hope that an Abraxian warship carrying her lover would sight them and take pursuit. She knew she wished in vain, though. For Brennok was dead. He had to be. As were all the members of the delegation party. No one, she thought, could have survived the carnage.Despondent, she gazed into the sea of liquid metal as tears streamed down her face. All was lost. Nothing the Cattin would do to her mattered anymore. For in her heart, she, too, was dead.IVThe portal led to an open cavern through which Brennok could see the face of an obsidian mountain range. Before he could exit the cavern, he first had to pass through a field of waving glassweed. He used the metal tolk stave to brush aside long clumps of the plant as its razor-sharp leaves vibrated wildly. Glassweed was deceptively deadly. The way was hazardous, but Brennok made it through with only superficial cuts. Brennok made his way out of the cavern and onto a mountain ledge. He could smell the sickly-sweet scents of the swamp below. For a moment it reminded him of that evening in Tularr. With Zarina. Even then, as young and as beautiful as she was, she had had the strength and courage to lead her people. Hopefully she had the courage to endure the Cattin's hospitality. Brennok stood at the edge of the precipice and surveyed the fetid landscape below. In the distance, beyond the obsidian mountain range, he could see the faint gleaming of the protean ocean. It separated Ulnar from the other lands of Ilandor. Despair and exhaustion weighed him down. It would be weeks before he could reach the coast. By then, the Cattin raiders he had been tracking would have reached their pride in Felgorr; and, in all probability, would have sold Zarina into slavery. Or, perhaps they would have decided to keep her for the leader of their pride, as a source of pleasure. Brennok forced the thought aside. Hold fast, my beloved...Suddenly, a Druud patrol flew through the starry sky. It was comprised of three chromium-skinned women who rode stoically atop winged gaalas. Brennok's heart swelled when he saw that they wore the faceless helmets and long crimson robes of Arbiters. He twisted the bronze band above the handgrip of the tolk stave, causing the carbonite crystal at its end to faintly glow. Its amber light grew brighter. Brennok waved the stave over his head, hoping the riders would notice his signal, and investigate. If they abided by the Druud Code of Assistance, he could secure passage with them and fly to Felgorr. He would then reach the plains lands ahead of the feline marauders. Once there, he would rescue his mate by any means necessary. Even if it meant unleashing the awesome power of the ancient tolk stave. It won't be much longer, Zarina...Your Brennok will find you..!Once he did find Zarina and was able to return her to the enclave keep, he would book passage on a Lanarian sea vessel due South. Three days sail would bring him to the island of Cunari; to the Kabuli temple where he had hidden Light Brand five years earlier. I only hope the native dwellers haven't lost their fear of their god's idol. Brennok had laid the enchanted blade on the outspread palms of the giant silver idol. He gambled that the dwellers' reverent fanaticism would dissuade them, and others, from attempting to loot the shrine; thereby protecting the godbane weapon. Now I'll have to face them as well...Brennok had no choice. He had to retrieve the only weapon forged that could destroy Xogs avatar. Despite his attempts to lead a peaceful life, Brennok found himself once again drawn into a series of insidious intrigues. He remembered something Pol had once said to him:Brennok, my friend, no matter how many years may have passed since you last wielded a blade in combat, or how many paintings you may painted or poems you may have written since, the truth is inescapable: You are a Godslayer. And as long as the dark gods conspire to wreak havoc in Ilandor, you will always be called upon to wield your blade once more... Grimly, Brennok waved the stave again. In doing so, he managed to catch the attention of the last Arbiter in the flying patrol.Xog... I will make you pay. Or die trying...

Sample 2: Dramatic Writing

EBONCOURTACT I, Scene 1Underground chamber with rough-hewn walls and stoneblock flooring. An arched portal at stage-right leads off. At stage-left is another exit, though it leads off through adangerous-looking collapsed wall. Upstage is yet another portal, this one square, inscribed with large runic words, and guarded on either side by CARYATID. The chamber is dank and unlit, almost pitch.As the curtain rises, a lanterns glow is seen coming onstage from the arched portal at stage-right. The lantern is carried by THAKK, a massive warrior, who is followed by ILYANA, a thief.Thakk makes his way downstage, impatiently probing the chambers darkness before grabbing Ilyana by the throat and pulling her to him.THAKKAnother darkened chamber and still we are lost! (tosses her aside, sending her sprawling) Damn the god who saw fit to send me on this foolish quest. He laughs at me, Ill bet. (calls out) Well, Ill have no more of this, you hear? For me the search is done.ILYANATake care of where you tread, you bellowing oaf. Youll likely get us killed.THAKKMove aside, wench.ILYANAWhere are you going?THAKKBack. Back to Xan. To my room at the inn. Back to bed. It seems like an eternity since I last slept.ILYANAYou cant leave now. Weve come so far. And were so close to finding the book. I just know it.THAKKBah. There is no book. Through half-dream days and fitful nights we look, searching for the old mans relic. But all we ever find is dust. No, there is no such thing as the Book of Names. It is only a myth, and he was a fool to think it ever existed.ILYANA(fearfully) Speak not ill of the dead. Lest he haunt you for befouling his name. THAKKLord Eboncourt is most likely resting on a divan, by the banks of Elysium. I dont think he would make the long journey back to this cess pit to bother with the likes of me. Now, if you will excuse me...ILYANAWait. What of the jewels Valen will pay you once the books been found? If you leave now, you forfeit your compensation.THAKK Jewels? Like the book, they probably dont even exist. Have you ever seen them? Has the boy ever shown you our promised compensation?ILYANAHe is a cautious man. He would no go bandying such wealth about during the course of the expedition.THAKK(laughs derisively) He is a boy. Too wet-nosed to lead the expedition now that his fathers gone.ILYANAHe is more than man enough to see this to the end. Are you?THAKKI do not understand...I am a warrior, a true man in every respect. Yet you scorn me. Instead, you wallow in the sickening adoration of a boy barely done feeding off his mothers teat.ILYANAI dont know what youre spouting off about. I have no interest in Valen. I have been hired to do a job, and thats it. Once the quest is done, well all go our separate ways. Only I intend to leave all the richer. Leave, if you wish. Though, in truth, we need your protection. Skulk off in the night like all the others, I dont care. It simply means therell be more jewels to divide amongst those few of us who havent deserted.THAKKYou are a bigger fool than the old man and his whelp. Cant you see they have been using us? After all, what are we to them but peasant filth? Pick up that trunk. Fight that foe. Trip that trap. There is no book. There is no treasure. There is nothing but perpetual darkness and our stupidity. (starts back the way he came, then stops at the arched portal, and turns back) Come back to Xan with me. ILYANAAnd do what?THAKKLive. I shall see to it you have food in your mouth, and a roof over your head.ILYANAAnd a man always on my back? No, Ill not be your whore.THAKKYou will not need to sell yourself any longer. I have a strong arm. I will hire out as a sell-sword, and earn an honest wage. You can hawk fruits at the market, or set up a lock stand. ILYANAWhos dreaming now? You are a scoundrel and a thief. As am I. The Eboncourts have given us the only opportunity we will ever have to really live. THAKKThe choice is yours, then. I leave for Xan...(about to exit) ILYANAThakk..! (hesitates, then resignedly undoes the throngs of her tunic) Wait.THAKK(triumphantly) Yes?(more)Without another word, she turns her back to him and shrugs off the tunic, allowing it to drop to the floor. Feigning ignorance, the warrior walks toward her.(contd)Forgive me, is there something you wanted to say?ILYANA(turns to him and places her hands on his chest) Its something I want to give.THAKKA bribe? To stay?ILYANAI will make it worth your while.THAKKAnd what about the boy?ILYANAThis stays between the two of us. Valens not to know.THAKK(pushes her down) I could just take you, woman. But youre not worth the effort. Give yourself to the boy. That is, if hes not too disgusted by your lowly breeding. And if he even knows what to do what your...charms.ILYANA(reveals her breasts, and lies back, undulating before him) You're right. What does a mere boy know of tupping a woman? It has been many months, Thakk. Have you not missed the feel of a womans flesh against yours?(more)Thakk eyes her, then smirks and unclasps his sword belt.He tosses it downstage, and undoes the ties to his breeches. He kneels down and surveys her body before grasping her breasts in his hands. He pulls her up to him, and kisses her roughly. As they part, and he is about to pull her blouse off, Ilyana points behind him.(contd)Look!THAKKQuiet, Ilyana. No more words or tricks. ILYANABut, look-THAKKI have waited a long time for this, woman. You not build me to a lather, then chase me off..ILYANATruly, you idiot, look! I think theres something over there.THAKK(acquiesces and gets up to look) This best not take long...(more)Thakk takes up the lantern and crosses upstage to the squared PORTAL. As he comes upon it, the portal is dimly lit, revealing the CARYATID, who remain unmoving and closed eyed.(contd)What in the name of Jarl..?ILYANAThose runes above the portal...Valen said thered be strange figures leading to the Sacred Library.THAKK(examining the life-like caryatid) Strange figure indeed.ILYANAWeve found it! The library must lie beyond the portal. And somewhere within it...the Book of Names! THAKKThey seem so real...(reaching for one of the statues)...as if you could awaken them with but a touch. ILYANADont..! It may be a trap.THAKK(withdrawing his hand) Then do your job, woman. Disarm the damned thing, or trip it.ILYANANot yet. I cant be sure of the nature of the trap until I know what those words say. Stay here.THAKKWhere are you going?ILYANATo get Valen. Hell be able to decipher them.Ilyana EXITS through the arched portal. Thakkbacks away from the caryatid.THAKKLovely ladies. A lovely death...

A Wondrous Night by Roger CottonThe moon smiled on a meadowwhere a weeping willow grew.Around flew faeries, through the air,and laced the glade with dew.On gauzy wing, in flowing robe,with laurel in their hair,the faerie folk began to singwhile dancing everywhere.Up on a root, there danced a newt, as danced the forest green."Let's strum the lute, and play the flute,hit drum, and tambourine!"The faerie glamour chimes were heard;strange energies unnamed. They chimed and charmed all beast and birdand, All Things Wild were tamed.The wolf, the owl, the bear, the ants,the bees about to sting,all joined the faeries in their dancethat wondrous night in Spring. Some pranced about on paws or claws.Some flapped their feathered wings.Others slithered on the ground,while others danced in rings.The forest creatures bobbed and weaved.They flew up over-endsy;and wove a moving tapestry of frolicking and frenzy. Around and round, on loamy ground, with flailing tail and heaving breast,they panted, howled, and growled and scowled!Then, scampered, scampered off to rest.The clamor reached its noisy peak.The danseurs dazed were tired.Some nestled here, some perched up there. Each lay where they desired.And, as the Moon tween woolen cloudsnodded off to sleep,the faeries tip-toed from the gladewith naught a single peep.Their wings unfurled, and they took flight; a trail of light behind them. A family board game for two to five players, ages 10 to adult.

Premise

Uh, ohhhh! Its the end of first day of Summer Vacation, and the sun is about to set.

You and your neighborhood friends have spent the day playing at the old tree house down the road. Your parents warned you that if you didnt get home in time for dinner, you would be grounded for the rest of summer.

Now, you're running home as fast as you can, but the only way to get back in time is by cutting across the very scary cemetery. You all stop breathlessly at the cemetery gates. No one tries to open it.

One of your friends dares you to cross. Another, double-dog dares you. The only thing you hate more than being grounded, is being called a chicken. You throw open the gates and the race is on!

Objective

The object of the game is to be the first of the neighborhood kids to make it across the very scary cemetery.

Along the way, you will encounter scary monsters and spooky places. Despite these obstacles, you must find the courage to make your way through the cemetery. And, you must do so before another player beats you, or, eats you!

For, in The Very Scary Cemetery, you may fall under a curse, or be bitten by a vampire. If this happens, you will become monsters yourself, and then you will have to chase other players across the cemetery. With luck, and special items you find along the way, you just may make it safely across The Very Scary Cemetery!

GAME OVERVIEW

WHAT IS CYBERPSI?CyberPsi: Agenda™ is the simple but exciting science fiction board game of intrigue and secret objectives.In CyberPsi, you are the leader of one of eight different factions that vie for control of the atmospheric city of Lithica: Admins, Bents, Cybers, Dynasts, MegaCorpers, PSIs, Purists, and Transgenics.Each faction has a series of agenda reflecting their ideologies and long term objectives. Agenda are realized through the completion of missions and organizational activities. As players enact their agenda, they impact the social, political, economic, and scientific aspects of the culture. In the initial release of the game, only three of the eight factions will be represented (Cybers, MegaCorpers, and PSIs). Subsequent expansions of the game will make more factions available, along with new areas of Lithica to explore and control.WHAT IS THE OBJECT OF THE GAME? The object of the game is to complete three agenda before any other player, and, while doing so, to gain the most control over Lithica as possible. To accomplish this, you must gather cards from various decks into hands that represent the completion of missions. Some cards represent: Actions, Activities, Agents, Equipment, and Missions. When a mission is completed, you turn the hand over to reveal what it is. At this point, opponents can attempt to thwart the mission by playing Thwart Cards, or, by attacking your mission agents with their own. If the mission is thwarted, all of the mission-support cards in that hand are discarded, and the mission fails.If a mission is successfully completed, the Mission Card value counts toward the fulfilment of your secret Agenda. As agenda are completed, you gain Influence Points which may be spent to gain control over Groups and Sites in parts of the city; effectively giving you control over those sectors. GAME DURATION AND SCENARIOSCyberPsi utilizes a scenario-based game objective system. As such, games may last from fifteen minutes, or up to one hour; depending on the scenario played. Battle game - Simulates a skirmish between your field agents and an enemy force for control of a single Sector.Mission game - Simulates the planning and completion of a secret mission. Agenda game - Where you attempt to be the first player to complete an agenda or to thwart an enemy agenda. Campaign Level game - Where the objective is to complete three agenda in an effort to gain as much control over Lithica as you can. You measure the amount of influence you have by the number of Influence points present in each sector, as represented by Groups and Sites in play. GAME FEATURESIn CyberPsi, you must find ways to put agents and resources into play so you may use them on missions. Once in play, your agents must attempt actions that will enable them to put certain types of Data cards into play so that you can expose the Who, What, How, and Why of your opponents' agenda. Political IntrigueIn the three to five player variants, you can engage in secretly conspiring with other players to defeat certain opponents. However, it will only be a matter of time until your alliance is no longer useful, and your previous allies will decide to double-cross you.ScenariosDuring game set up, players can select from a variety of scenarios that modify conditions that will exist during the game. These conditions will impact how players can reach their objectives.Boss-level NPCsAnother feature of the game is the presence of Boss-level Non-Player Characters (NPCs) in key city sectors who must be defeated before you can undertake missions in them. Boss-level NPCs are so powerful and well-guarded, that temporary truces need to be formed with other players so that you can eliminate the bosses.Exciting Combat SystemCombat in CyberPsi incorporates cardplay and die rolls to add logical elements of chance to the mix. You are not limited to annihilating your opponents, either. Your agents may instead subdue and capture enemy agents for interrogation, ransom, or conversion. It all depends on your mission objectives and on conditions that exist on the game board.

GAME WORLD

LITHICALithica is a sprawling megatropolis commonly referred to as, The City Between. It hovers high in the atmosphere, supported in a geosynchronous orbit by a sprawling ten mile complex of machinery and power plants on the Earth's polluted surface. This is magnetic levitation and contragrav technology on a massive scale.The Lithican skyline is composed of gigantic 'skypiercers' that rise up from the streets. These massive skyscrapers are interconnected by travel tubes and sky rail lines. There are animated holovid advert boards everywhere, pushing packaged news and product advertisements to the populace. Swarming currents of hover car traffic washes over the city.Lithica is occupied by over ten million people who struggle to live within onerous conditions caused by limited room for growth, extreme population density, and environmental pollution. The quality of life in Lithica is measured in terms of a Misery Index. The higher the misery, the more chaotic life becomes in Lithica. The more chaotic that life becomes, the more miserable the citizens of Lithica become.There are those who benefit from the suffering of others. These sinister groups actively promote that chaos. Criminal and bent organizations foment chaos in order to obscure their activities, and to exploit the weak. However, there are forces for good present in the clamorous humanity of Lithica.Lawful organizations and familial clans seek to restore society to the pinnacle it once enjoyed prior to the devastation caused by terrorist organizations a century earlier. Social groups champion the cause of every day citizens and the disenfranchised. Collectively, these groups help to lower the index of misery in Lithica, helping to make it a better place. As a player, you decide what type of organization you want to control. And, what type of agenda you want to promote as the result of your agents actions.CULTURE OF LITHICABecause of the finite space available within the enclosed city, Lithicas crowded society is highly regulated. Their society is governed by a bureaucratic agency known as, The Administration. The Administration establishes policy meant to maintain order and stability, and to ensure that the societal machine is optimally productive. To this end, each citizen is subject to exhaustive job performance and civic duty evaluations every year. The results of these evaluations are immediately recorded by lower-level administrators and compared. The criterion of these evaluations is designed to be objective, so that all citizens have an equal opportunity to be assigned higher-level work assignments. The better the results, the better the citizens living space allocation and position within Lithica. The best work assignment is considered that of being an Administrator. Once citizens become Administrators, they remain in those positions until death. All other citizens are subject to increases and decreases of their social positions. Since membership in a particular caste is based on a citizens level of productivity and value to society, citizens jealously protect their status by working diligently, and by performing community service functions that show civic involvement. As a result, a caste system has arisen over the course of generations. The Administrators, of course, are considered the societys highest caste. When in public, citizens are under constant supervision and surveillance. The only place where they have privacy is in their own apartment units. Since these units can only comfortably accommodate two individuals at a time, it is difficult for groups to gather privately. Therefore, The Administrators do not insist on surveillance within residential areas.There is, however, an underground movement of dissident citizens who seek to abolish the caste system, and to amend the harsh laws that regulate their lives. They gather clandestinely, communicating as avatars via the InfiNet. The movement was orchestrated by middle caste citizens who were inspired by subversive broadcasts from banished citizens, who live in free cities. LawsAside from poor job performance or limited civic involvement, citizens jeopardize their standing in their castes by committing crimes. Strict laws established by Administrators regulate Lithica. Even minor infractions, whether intended or not, are met with swift, often stringent punishment. Law Enforcement agents are empowered to mete out proscribed punishments on the spot. Unless there are citizens of a higher caste who will step forward and testify as a witness on behalf of the suspect, there is no legal recourse. If recourse is granted, a televised court session is held that night, with any viewers who are watching acting as the jury. After listening to all of the testimony and any surveillance footage, viewers determine whether the suspect is innocent or guilty by using electronic voting devices within their apartment units. Repeat offenders face the prospect of being reduced to the status of Robotika, the lowest caste. While in this caste, they labor in the subterranean tunnels, mining coal and drilling oil. Banishment, the severest form of punishment, is reserved for particularly violent citizens, and for social dissidents.CitizenshipImmigration to the city has been halted. The only permanent residents of the city have been born there, to current citizens. Children are placed in care groups that socialize them to Lithicas society.Privileges of CitizenshipSince Lithica provides housing, food, training, and health care for every member of society, money is not utilized. Instead, citizens are allotted recreational passes based on job performance, which grant them access to myriad forms of entertainment. Gambling, for instance, is an institutionalized form of entertainment. Instead of gambling with and for money, citizens may bet recreational passes. If they win, they gain additional passes. If they lose, they must pay off their debt by relinquishing other recreational passes, or by working during their off-shift periods. POLITICS OF LITHICAPrior to the Last Great Wars, capitalism had spread like a wildfire across the economic landscape of the world. As a result, megacorporations formed. Now, they reign supreme. The few who control these conglomerates have attained power beyond comprehension. Their machinations dictate how everyone else on the planet is to live or die. These mysterious power mongers have ensconced themselves in high-tech citadels and they exist in a class that is not only above the law, but which is the law. They view every resource as theirs to exploit and every person as their powerless consumer. Lawful organizations and familial clans seek to restore society to the pinnacle it once enjoyed prior to devastating nuclear attacks that were perpetrated two hundred years earlier by terrorist groups. The economic and cultural centers of the most powerful nations on Earth were devastated by dirty bomb incidents, biologic warfare, and cultural subversion. The game, therefore, is set in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by the sleeks (megacorpers and the rich), geeks (cybers), and phreeks (espers and bent groups) of Lithica.Since the 'End of Days' time period, when nations waged all out war as a result of the actions of the terrorist organizations, various social groups have arisen to champion the cause of every day citizens, and the disenfranchised. Collectively, these groups work to lower the index of misery in Lithica, helping to make it a better place. In fact, after a long period of economic downturn and technological stagnation, society has begun to climb up from the murky depths of chaos and terror.GAME WORLD TECHNOLOGYFor over thirty years, technological development on Lithica slowed. Government-sponsored research in the pure sciences had came to a halt decades before; deemed less a priority than the applied sciences, which offered the best hope of replenishing the city's dwindling resources. Conservation was the order of the day. Everything was to be recycled; including technology. Consequently, technology changed little in the decades that followed. Initially, the aging tech was diligently maintained. But, as time wore on, citizens lost hope of hearing from the descendants of the generation colony ships that had left Earth over one hundred years earlier. Slowly, the populace sank into a collective depression, and Lithica entered a period of scientific malaise.Over time, mainstream Lithican society became cynical and decadent. Without hope or faith, the majority of citizens considered morality no more than an outmoded abstraction that had very little influence on their way of life. Violent crime soared, as did the significant number of cancer and blood disorder patients that doctors had to treat.What was even more alarming to them was the statistically large number of babies that were being born with some sort of genetic abnormality.After a ten year study, government scientists determined that the contra-gravity technology that held the city aloft was generating an electromagnetic energy field with mutagenic properties. This mutagenic energy was radically altering the physiology of Lithicans on a cellular level. Subsequent testing indicated what the government scientists feared most: that continued exposure to the mutagenic energy would hyper-accelerate the physiological development of the humans on the floating city. These finding were kept secret from the general population in order to keep citizens from panicking. Only the scientists who worked on the top secret research experiments and the highest-ranking members of government knew of this danger.With the encouragement of the City Council, there was a public campaign to renew the push for life sciences research; especially in the area of cellular development. MegaCorporations, who had already been conducting advanced biotechnological research and testing for decades, took the lead and began to market astonishing pharmaceutical products.Then, something extraordinary happened.While replicating a series of genome mapping experiments from the mid-twenty-first century, a team of geneticists at MacroGen- the most powerful MegaCorporation in Lithica-- had stumbled across the existence of Gene Alpha. By controlling this master gene, the geneticists were able to alter the growth and function of all other genes in the human body. After that, scientific knowledge expanded by leaps and bounds. The Biotech Renaissance had begun.The significant advances in biotechnology that resulted from this discovery led to further advances in other areas of applied science; such as: quantum processor computing, neural chip networking, atomic-level construction, and particle transmission. Combined with the old micro-miniaturization and superconductivity technology that was first used to hold Lithica aloft, these advances ushered Lithica in to the Nanotech Era.Hyper-scientific technology has since proliferated beyond society's ability to control it. Biologic computer interfaces, cloning, and cybernetic implantation are everyday applications of this runaway technology. Even psychic-enhancement drugs are beginning to be available over the counter. Genetic engineering and gene therapy have altered Man's physiology and society dramatically.Bio-synthetic organs and prosthetics promise longer and younger-looking lives. NuDerm, a remarkable brand of artificial skin, makes it possible for burn victims to be cosmetically restored. For some, usually the rich and famous, NuDerm also affords the ultimate in self-expression. Grown-to-order NuDerm is combined with the genetic code of animals to create outrageous fashion statements. Affluent citizens have taken to wearing sheer, gauzy clothing, or nothing at all, in order to show off their unique skeins. Some are covered with such decorative touches as leopard spots, zebra stripes, mink tufts, and even gila scales. Most of the populace wears clothing reminiscent of the clothing in Fifth Element (I will be posting reference images soon).As a result of the extreme developments in fashion, Puritanical laws and mores regarding sexual behavior and the public exposure of nudity have given sway to this 23rd century culture of unabashed narcissism. Genetically-engineered aquanauts are being bred to colonize the Earth's poisoned under seas; while penal colony astronauts are scheduled to begin mining ore from the Moon.Within the crystal fiber infrastructure of the MegaCorporations' computer networks, NetHeads explore and populate the digital frontiers of the InfiNet. Many of these cybers live more in the electronic manifestations of their minds than in reality.Psychically-gifted Espers lurk on the fringes of society. They are the progeny of test subjects who unknowingly took brain-evolvement drugs generations before. Developed by the overzealous MegaCorp pharmaceutical firms, these drugs led to the development of a host of mind-altering medicines and compounds. But, not before they spawned a whole new breed of human being; human beings who can communicate through thought alone, who can glimpse visions of the past and future, and who can sometimes move objects with their minds. Though the existence of Espers is largely considered to be no more than an urban myth, high-level executives in the MegaCorporations know better. They have been secretly tracking down and "recruiting" Espers for years, forcing them to serve as covert soldiers in the MegaCorps' quiet war for power.There are other normal members of society who are also aware of the presence of Espers. These normals, or "Zombies," as the Espers call them, have formed secret organizations that conspire to eliminate the Espers. Since Espers give birth at a prodigious rate- usually to twins or triplets-- these secret organizations know that as the number of Espers grows, so too, will grow their demand for societal acceptance. And, political power. Their greater fear is that Espers will soon outnumber and even "replace" normal human beings.Despite their persecution at the hands of the normal humans, the ruling factions of Espers strive for peaceful coexistence. They want to help their biological cousins better adjust to the dangerous effects of the contragrav radiation, so that the normals can transition to the next step in their evolutionary process.It is within this neon futurescape that your group secretly operates; working behind the scenes, keeping a low profile as you struggle to further your mysterious agenda. Do you work toward the salvation of Man or toward his enslavement? Do you seek to aid the MegaCorps or to destroy them? Or, do you inhabit the fringes of society, working toward your own ends? The future is now... and the choice is yours.
